Feature Parity: Implement File Extension Restrictions for Global Mailbox (MYSFG & SFTP)

Currently, the robust file extension filtering mechanism available for traditional Sterling File Gateway (SFG) mailboxes via the disallowExtensionsToUpload property in mailbox.properties does not work for Global Mailboxes across all protocols

  • Existing Gap: While a custom user exit for SFTP has been partially implemented on our end, we have no mechanism to restrict users from uploading files with specific, disallowed extensions (e.g., .exe, .bat, .zip with specific content, etc.) through the myFileGateway (MYSFG) interface when using Global Mailboxes.

  • Current Behavior: Users can successfully upload files with restricted extensions via MYSFG to Global Mailboxes, bypassing essential security controls.

How will this idea be used?

This is a significant security concern for our organization. The ability for users to upload potentially malicious file types (like executables or specific script files) poses a direct risk of introducing malware, viruses, or other security threats into our managed file transfer environment and downstream systems. We need a consistent, enterprise-wide control to enforce our security policies across all access methods (SFTP, MYSFG, etc.) and all mailbox types (traditional and Global Mailbox). Desired Functionality (The Solution)We are requesting a product enhancement to provide a unified, out-of-the-box solution that works seamlessly with Global Mailboxes for both MYSFG and SFTP protocols.

  • Goal: The disallowExtensionsToUpload functionality (or a similar, new mechanism) should be extended to apply uniformly to all Global Mailbox upload events, regardless of the protocol used by the producer (MYSFG, SFTP, etc.).
