To change PROCESS library FB80 requirement

Scenario: CD transmissions between z/OS and Windows or Linux.

Large Windows and Unix FileNames have to be constructed via concatenation of multiple tokens (strings and symbols).

The reason is the PROCESS library is required to be RECFM=FB LRECL=80 (and cols 73-80 are ignored).

We’ve opened a PMR and Support has confirmed that “nothing has changed in the latest version and hence the concatenation of the symbols is still required."

What is your industry? Banking
How will this idea be used?

The PROCESS library format should be more flexible in order to avoid a crazy deconstruction and reconstruction in large path+filenames. If large path+filenames have blanks inside of them, the complexity increases a lot.

If the invocation engine of the transmissions is running in middelware, it should be able to send the entire invocation process up to 255 characters. Nowadays, the requirement of max 72 characters is outdated.

    Hi Vijay

Some times, IBM changes the format of critical software files (for example, from PDS to PDSE) and the customers must change their installations. It's not a problem, it must be planned and executed.

We don't understand what type of "instability" could cause the change of the process library format. This change can be easily tested at IBM labs avoiding any "instability" in the customers.

The requirement of max 72 characters is outdated. We are living in 2022 year. Other file transfers have not had this requirement for many years.

It not makes sense that 9 of 9 opened RFEs (100%) to Connect Direct brand have not accepted. IBM must hear its customers and IBM must empathize with customer needs. All C:D RFEs have been closed "not under consideration". From a customer point of view, regarding to this efficiency, it's hard to suggest new ideas. We don't like to waste our time.

As you mentioned, we'll share all opened RFEs with our colleagues in other shops to increase the number of votes. Although, maybe they are also tired of opening requests that are thrown in the trash.

Thank you for opening this enhancement request with IBM. I have reviewed it thoroughly with my team. Unfortunately we will not be able to accept this request as the changes would cause significant impact to our broader customer base possibly causing instability as it would involve major changes to the Process library.

In addition, we have not seen this request from many customers in past and hence I am marking this as ”Not under consideration” until we have significant customers asking for the same. Other customers would be able to vote and add comments and we can revisit this in future if broader customers request the same.

I appreciate your time to submit your idea and would encourage you to use the tool to suggest new ideas that may come up.

    Sincerely,

    Vijay Chougule
