Support for Type=simple startup method in systemd for Connect Direct

The systemd is the default system manager on RHEL 8. Connect Direct should support service startup through systemd using Type=simple startup method.

User can use Type=forking with external (custom) startup script but this requires to create additional startup script and dependencies. Software should support standard Type=simple systemd method for both startup and stop actions without a need of creating additional startup scripts.

Currently Type=simple does not work properly for Connect Direct because the initial PID changes to the child PID during the startup (daemonizes itself) which causes that systemd does not properly report service status even while using PIDFile feature in systemd.

What is your industry? Banking
How will this idea be used?

This will allow to use default systemd system manager on RHEL 8 without a need of creating additional startup scripts and dependencies.

We are looking to do an interim fix on top of CD Unix 6.3 targeting early Q2, 2024 ( April). The fix shall include a sample systemd unit service file in the etc directory, as well as CDU start/stop scripts which the service will use. Customer’s request for type=simple is technically not feasible, because CDU demonizes itself during startup. Customer’s objection to type=forking is that they would have to provide start/stop scripts, but that’s not a problem anymore after the fix.

    Thanks,

Thank you for opening this enhancement request with IBM. I have reviewed it thoroughly with my team. Unfortunately we won't be able to accept it. From a technical perspective using the simple startup method isn't valid for a daemonized application. We do intend to improve documentation of startup scripts to provide guidance on how you might create and maintain scripts on common UNIX/Linux operating systems. Thank you for opening this request and please don't hesitate to open any new ones that you'd like us to consider.

    Sincerely,

    Chris Sanders
