How will this idea be used?

We have a requirement to send emails to trading partners but the emails need to be digitally signed. There is no provision to send the digitally signed emails to trading partners today in PEM. Adding this ability to the product will be useful to customers to meet their ever-changing security requirements. Digitally signed message can come only from the owner of the digital ID used to sign it. The digital ID provides verification of the sender's authenticity, thereby helping to prevent message tampering.

With software customers, they are using their own email servers. We are researching whether this can be addressed by the customer by using their email servers and whether PEM has to do anything special to allow for such a configuration.
