Native merge support for Operator-managed CR properties and ConfigMap-mounted customer_overrides.properties in IBM Sterling OMS

The Sterling OMS Operator supports two independent mechanisms for supplying customer_overrides.properties content:

  1. CR-managed properties, injected via propertyRef (ConfigMap-backed) and secretKeyRef (Secret-backed) entries in the custom resource.

  2. A ConfigMap mounted directly over customer_overrides.properties (rather than over the Operator-generated runtime file), which preserves Operator-managed content and allows secret references to resolve correctly.

Both mechanisms are supported and functional in isolation, and getServerProperties confirms correct resolution when used as designed. Today, however, there is no native way for the Operator to merge these two sources — each has to be managed and mounted separately.

Suggested Solution

Add native merge support in the Operator so that CR-managed properties (via propertyRef / secretKeyRef) and ConfigMap-mounted overrides can be combined into a single resolved customer_overrides.properties, without requiring a manual mount workaround.

Business Justification

  • Reduces operational overhead of maintaining a manual mount-based workaround to combine CR-managed and ConfigMap-managed properties.

  • Aligns configuration management with a single, Operator-supported mechanism rather than a layered workaround.
