Support for Workload Identity Federation (Cloud-Native Authentication)

Currently, the integration requires the manual storage and management of private keys for authentication. Storing private keys poses significant security risks, increases management overhead (credential rotation, lifecycle management), and deviates from modern enterprise security standards.

To align with modern security best practices, we require a cloud-native, keyless authentication mechanism to interact with the platform securely.

We request the implementation of Workload Identity Federation (OIDC-based identity federation).

Instead of using a stored private key, the system should allow external workloads between IBM Cloud and Google Cloud to exchange their cloud-native identity tokens for a short-lived access token via an established trust relationship

How will this idea be used?

Enhanced Security: Eliminates the risk of credential leakage, hardcoded keys, and unauthorized access due to compromised private keys.

  • Zero Credential Management: Eliminates the operational overhead of rotating, storing, and auditing static keys/secrets.

  • Industry Alignment: Aligns the platform with industry-standard security architectures implemented by other major SaaS providers (e.g., Blue Yonder's adoption of Workload Identity).

  • Compliance: Helps enterprise customers meet strict compliance and governance frameworks that forbid the use of long-lived static secrets.
