The CII standard is the EDI standard developed by the Center for the Informatization of Industry in 1991 for use in all industries in Japan as an expanded and reformed standard of the EIAJ standard, which was designed exclusively for electronic instruments industries and which was jointly developed by the Japan Electronic Machinery Manufacturers Association and the Center for the Informatization of Industry of Japan and Information Processing Development Center in 1987. As of 1995, this is the only EDI standard allowing Kanji data to be exchanged between heterogeneous types of computers.
