Incase of zero inventory, When reservation is created. IBM needs to provide error in the reservation response instead of sending just the line_id.

Incase of zero inventory, When reservation is created. IBM needs to provide error in the reservation response instead of sending just the line_id. This will help us not place an order as there is no inventory in IV

How will this idea be used?

In our case, before an sale order is being placed we create an reservation & the proceed with creating the PICK in SIM.

Example:

Lets us there are 2 units in Node Availability, IV Supply & in SIM. An order(ORDER_1) is being placed for 2 unit. So reservation is created for the ORDER_1 & 2 units have been reduced from Node Availability. Once we receive reservation response from the IBM we create an pick in SIM by tagging the reservation Id to pick.

As part of above order i.e ORDER_1 being placed, now the invt pictures is Node Availability is 0, 2units are IV Supply & in SIM.

Now an another Order (ORDER_2) is being placed for 1 unit. We try to create reservation for 1 unit. Since, there is no inventory in Node Availability, IBM doesn't create reservation & as part of Reservation response IBM is just providing line_id in the response. Since we don't get any error in reservation response, we are proceeding with creating any pick by tagging reservation id as null.

This resulting is inventory mismatch. Hence requesting IBM to send an error reservation response in case when there is no inventory in Node Availability

The https://api.watsoncommerce.ibm.com/inventory/{tenantId}/v2/reservations endpoint supports multi-line reservations across same-cart or cross-cart scenarios. The calling application must validate each reservation line in the response:

For every line, confirm that totalReservedQuantity matches the requested quantity.

    • If totalReservedQuantity < quantity, the system has only secured a partial reservation. If your workflow does not allow partial captures, set acceptPartialReserve=false. In this mode, totalReservedQuantity is always zero on failure.

Because each line can return different outcomes, the API does not surface failures as HTTP-level errors.

    Recommendation for your use case:

    • Always set acceptPartialReserve=false.

    • Treat any line where totalReservedQuantity == 0 as a hard failure. In this condition, no reservation was created for that item.

Marking not under consideration as this is not a defect nor enhancement request.
