Streamline Global Mailbox Install/Upgrade Process

To upgrade/install Global Mailbox is a large and complex process. My current Global Mailbox production environment encompasses two data centers, each containing the following (4 SFG/GM servers, 6 Cassandra/Zookeeper servers, 2 MQ servers). We are not containerized.

As part of SFG/GM's install/upgrade process, it will handle the SDK/JDK upgrade within installation manager. For some reason, this is not the case for the Cass/Zoo servers, which require a separate upgrade outside of IM. This doubles the number of tasks to upgrade the Cass/Zoo servers.

MQ cannot be directly upgraded (within linux systems). You must first uninstall the existing version, install the new version, and then install any additional fixes necessary. Once again, this increases the number of tasks and time needed.

When you have to upgrade SFG/GM, Cass/Zoo, & MQ at once, this is very difficult to do within normal weekend maintenance weekends.

My suggestions/asks are for two things to help streamline and speed up the upgrade/install process:

  1. Update linux MQ to be able to install-in-place without requiring an uninstall and additional command line actions to upgrade.

  2. Update the Cass/Zoo upgrade process within Installation Manager to include the SDK/JDK upgrade (as it already does for SFG/GM).

If anyone knows of a better way to accomplish this without containers or upgrading the software, please let me know.

How will this idea be used?

To speed up the upgrade/install process for IBM Global Mailbox and its supporting products.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your ideas to IBM. We truly value our relationship with you and appreciate your willingness to share details about your experience, your recommendations, and ideas.

For MQ, unfortunately we do not control the offering as it's a separate product from Global Mailbox. Our recommendation would be to open an idea request for the MQ team to address in-place upgrades as you have suggested.

For Global Mailbox Cassandra/ZooKeeper upgrades, you should be able to point to the new JDK as part of the upgrade process using Installation Manager. See attached screenshots for an example of upgrading from 6.1.0.1 to 6.1.2.2

I'm also seeing that with MQ 9.3, you will have to install MQExplorer separately.
