We built a framework to handle this. Scheduler calls a shell script on the SI server, passing it a set of parameters which get written to an XML file. The workflowLauncher.sh is called, passing the XML file to provide parameters.
Status is written back to log files and the script checks for that upon completion of the workflowLauncher call. An appropriate return code is provided so the scheduler (Autosys, Control-M etc...) knows what happened.
